Job Description

Theatr Clwyd is looking for an experienced Lighting Technician, with skills in rigging, focusing and the making of set electrics, to be part of our Lighting team. With a specialism in facilitating all lighting requirements, the team delivers a service to Theatr Clwyd productions of the highest possible standards, working in our newly refurbished theatre spaces.

The Role
The Lighting Technician will work as part of the lighting team to deliver a service to all Theatr Clwyd and visiting productions of the highest possible standards. The role demands a good level of knowledge of lighting within a theatre making context and strong practical skills. Our Theatre Making Family provides world-class theatre making facilities and the Lighting Technician supports our produced work, as well as supporting the visiting companies we invite into our building.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support for all Lighting requirements for Theatr Clwyd productions, and work with creative team members to ensure technical support in lighting is anticipated and provided for all Theatr Clwyd’s work both within and outside the building, including supporting the Venue Technical team for visiting productions and for events.
- To undertake practical work in relation to the making of LX specific requirements for Theatr Clwyd productions, including set electrics and any practical LX within props/costumes.
- To undertake practical work in relation to get-ins, fit-ups, strikes and get-outs including the assembly, rigging, adjustment and use of lighting equipment, special effects (including set electrics) and any practical LX props etc.
- Provide lighting and technical support to all users of the theatre and any rehearsal spaces.
- Provide lighting and technical cover during performances as required.
- To set up any technical equipment required for the performance or event spaces.
- Where required, to provide technical assistance to external users.
- To be responsible for opening up and shutting down backstage areas when required.
- With the other Technicians, maintain the general upkeep of the backstage areas, including the stage, light and sound control boxes, LX workshop and storage areas, ensuring that they are kept clean, tidy and well maintained at all times.
The Person
- Practical relevant experience working in a venue or theatre technical department, or a touring company or similar, or an appropriate recognised qualification.
- Experience in rigging, adjustment, programming and operation of theatrical lighting, power distribution, and practical electrical and/or electronics understanding.
- Knowledge of electrical theory and practice relating to theatre lighting systems.
- Up-to-date knowledge of lighting systems, control apparatus, equipment and its maintenance.
- Working knowledge of rigging methods and the safe use of lifting gear.
- Demonstrable ability to read and understand technical plans, with knowledge of CAD and other applications.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate clearly and consistently with all theatre and event space users, especially non-technical users.
- Ability to use a wide range of portable power tools and hand tools safely and confidently.
- An organised approach, with a proven track record of meeting deadlines and managing conflicting priorities.
- Experience in implementing Health and Safety requirements and risk assessments.
- Safe lifting and carrying experience, and willing to work at height.
- Confidence in working independently but also willingness to collaborate across many departments.
- Ability to work flexible and unsociable hours including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
