Theatr Clwyd, National Theatre Wales, and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru have joined forces to find, develop and produce the best new plays in Wales. AM DDRAMA / PLAY ON will enable writers in Wales to connect directly to three of the nation’s biggest producing theatre companies.

Since March 2022, we’ve assembled an eager panel of six freelance and in-house readers to give feedback on new work with a view to matching the most promising scripts and playwrights with the company best placed to develop, commission and produce their work, in Welsh or English.

The second cohort of Readers will be engaged for a term of six months and the panel will come together monthly (online) to discuss submitted plays. Readers will be supported with a full induction on reading and report writing for AM DDRAMA / PLAY ON.

Each freelance reader will receive a retainer of £200 per month for up to two days of their time, including the monthly readers’ meeting. Some flexibility is appreciated as more of the readers’ time may be required (and paid for) subject to regular review and the level of submissions, month to month.

Who are we looking for?

We’d love to work with readers from all over Wales, with a variety of lived experience and professional experience. If you’re into watching, reading and talking about plays, if you know a great story when you read one, if you have a feel for crackling dialogue and distinctive voice, we want to hear from you.

You’ll be someone interested in evolving your knowledge of story, form and the development of scripts and ideas for performance. You may or may not have experience in a literary department, as a script editor, development executive or as a produced playwright yourself. Perhaps you’re a stage director, a drama teacher, or a student of theatre or literature. Maybe you’re a costume designer, a producer or a composer and you can’t get enough of incredible plays. Maybe you work in publishing, advertising or content creation and have a passion for amazing stories on the stage.

You should be 18+, Welsh, based in Wales or working in Wales.

If you have previously expressed an interest to become a reader and are still interested, there is no need to re submit the form / video. You’re welcome to forward your original expression of interest for consideration. If you wish to submit a new application, please feel free to do so.
