News Story
Theatr Clwyd Music has been working across Flintshire with 1,600 pupils from 70 primary schools as part of the First Experiences Programme. The First Experiences Programme provides children with an opportunity to learn an instrument and sing as a starting point on their musical journey.
Theatr Clwyd Music brought a unique opportunity to the local children, performing with musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The two-day event at William Aston Hall saw pupils meet the orchestra members as well as play alongside them, performing music that included the BBC 10 Pieces arrangements of In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edward Grieg and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.

It was wonderful for our pupils to have the opportunity to play alongside such fantastic orchestral musicians but equally important is the work of our specialist Music Associates in schools. This event has been the culmination of two terms of learning, and I have seen first-hand the impact the First Experiences programme has on children and their schools. The programme compliments and extends schools’ existing music offer and, as well as musical skills, pupils develop their confidence, creativity, teamwork skills and resilience. It provides a pathway to vocal or instrumental lessons, but most importantly, it’s fun, accessible and encourages a lifelong love of music.Cath Sewell, Director of Theatr Clwyd Music
The First Experiences Programme is funded by the National Music Service of Wales as part of the Welsh National Plan for Music Education. With the support of Flintshire County Council, Theatr Clwyd Music has been able to go above the minimum requirement and is providing music sessions every week, at no cost to schools or families, for two terms in most primary schools in Flintshire.

I enjoyed this event immensely – it was wonderful to see so many primary school children playing alongside the BBC National Orchestra, paying attention to the conductor and playing in time. It is clear that our unique arrangement in Flintshire for the delivery of music education in partnership with the Theatre Clwyd Music Trust is providing superb opportunities for our pupils to engage with and enjoy high quality musical experiences. I am sure that the experience of playing alongside the BBC National Orchestra is one that these pupils and their families will never forget and will inspire them to continue to engage in music making for years to come.Cllr Mared Eastwood, Cabinet Member for Education, Welsh Language, Culture and Leisure
