Liz Taylor
In recent years, I’ve written solely for television; contributing regularly for continuing drama series, BBC Doctors and, most recently, Hollyoaks. I also have children’s animation and television drama projects in development.
As a teen, I dabbled in theatre. I wrote a play which was performed at the Royal Court Young Writer’s festival, and I participated in the first international young playwright’s festival in Australia. Having grown up in Flint, I hoped the residency would allow me to reconnect with my roots and the theatre; and give me the chance to learn as well as to create.
Back in Wales, experiencing life close to my childhood home, the residency took on a will of its own, bigger than my creative ideas and writing. It became about my identity, where I come from, why I am the way I am and how I’d like to be.
In the theatre offices, it felt right to be vulnerable and open to new ways of expression. Watching rehearsals was an unforgettable experience – to see the artists working in proximity had a huge impact. The idea I was working on morphed into three (one of them is a musical – I don’t even like musicals!). This residency’s been a game changer.
So now, if anyone asks, I’m a writer who writes for television and theatre.
